Lung Cancer Screening

Lung cancer screening is for people who feel well. It can help find lung cancer early, before you notice any symptoms, when treatment is more likely to be successful.

Lung Screening is for people:

  • Aged 55 to 74
  • Who smoke or have smoked in the past

What is Lung Cancer Screening?

Lung cancer screening helps identify people who may be at a higher risk of developing lung cancer. It usually begins with questions about your breathing, smoking history and general health. If needed, you’ll be offered a quick, low-dose CT scan to look for early signs of lung cancer. Most people receive a normal result and don’t need any further tests.

What happens?

You’ll receive your invitation

If you’re eligible, you’ll be invited to take part in Lung Cancer Screening by your GP practice or local NHS service.

Your assessment

You’ll be asked some questions about your breathing, smoking history and general health to assess whether a CT scan is right for you.

Have your CT scan (if needed)

If you’re offered a scan, it usually takes around five minutes and doesn’t require any injections or special preparation.

Get your results

You’ll usually receive your results within around 4 weeks. If further tests are needed, you’ll be contacted and supported through the next steps.

“Don’t ignore changes in your body – get them checked. Going for screening meant my cancer was found early.”
